Kennedy Space Centers Tours

Upon arrival you will select the tour package you wish to take. The basic admission is plenty all in itself but if you want to spend the extra money for the Cape Canaveral tour, be sure to bring a photo ID for everyone in your party aged 13 and over and plan to spend the extra $20 per person.

The tours and activities included in the basic admission include a bus tour with three stops. Tours start at 10:00 a.m. and run continuously every 15 minutes. The buses are very comfortable and are air conditioned. It's tempting to take your time at each of these tour stops but if you lollygag too much, you won't have time to see it all and you'll want to plan this as a two day outing. Here are the three stops:

Tour Stop: Launch Complex 39 Observation Gantry: Space Shuttle operations are the main focus at the Launch Complex 39 Observation Gantry. First, check out the briefing film and interactive exhibit area. Then go straight to the top of the gantry for a 360 degree view of the Launch Pads, the Crawlerway (the eight mile gravel road that the space shuttle and launch pad travel on from the Vehicle Assembly Building to the launch pad, an 8 hour, 8 mile trek) and the Vehicle Assembly Building. There's a snack bar at this facility. Bring some change with you if you want to use the viewing telescopes to see a close up of the launching pads.

Tour Stop: International Space Station Center: Dozens of launches and spacewalks will be required to complete construction of the International Space Station. On a tour stop dedicated to this huge project, you'll get a closer look at Space Station components as they are prepared for flight on the upper level. You will be asked to not take flash photography in this area so as to not interfere with operations. You can spend as much time as you like watching workers as they load modules (they call them "suitcases") for the next flight to space.

On the lower level, walk through actual modules and see how the things astronauts use are stored, see how they sleep, what their kitchen, shower and bathrooms looks like. It's probably nothing like you've imagined.

Tour Stop: Apollo/Saturn V Center: The Apollo/Saturn V Center features a 363- foot moon rocket. Don't miss the Firing Room Theater which re-creates an Apollo launch and the Lunar Theater which depicts the first moon landing. Touch a moon rock. Here at the Apollo/Saturn V Center, you'll find a sit down cafeteria with hamburgers, hotdogs, salads, and snacks.

At the end of your tour, you'll board the bus and head back to the Visitors Complex about 14 minutes away. It's possible to view a 700 pound eagle nest on the way. Be on the lookout to your right.

Back at the Visitors Complex, enjoy many activities: The IMAX theater with 3D 40-minute presentations, Shuttle Launch Experience, Astronaut Encounter, Robot Scouts, New Millennium Theater, Rocket Garden Tours, U.S. Astronaut Hall of Fame, NASA Art Gallery, Space Walk of Honor, Astronaut Memorial, and the Launch Status Center where live briefings go on, just to name a few.

There are plenty of water fountains, places to sit and restrooms for your convenience. For up the minute information about the Kennedy Space Center, visit their website at kennedyspacecenter.com
