If you are ever wondering where to vacation, let me suggest the Dominican Republic. We stayed in Punta Cana on Bavaro Beach and it was honestly the best vacation we ever had. The scenery, the beach, the resort, the ocean...it was all perfect.
The Dominican Republic is nestled southeast of the Bahamas and west of Puerto Rico. It also shares the island with Haiti. It has over 300 miles of white sugar beaches coupled with extensive mountain ranges. Punta Cana is on the most eastern tip with great weather all year round.
You know you have arrived when you land at the Punta Cana International Airport, covered with its straw roof and open walls. Greeted with native women and leis, you feel right away like you are in paradise. Of course, like most 3rd< world countries, the roads still have something to be desired. So after a very bumpy, yet interesting ride, we arrived at the resort. And then you know you are in paradise.
We stayed at the Majestic Colonial and I'm not sure if I'll ever go anywhere else. It was that good. You are greeted immediately in the open concierge with a cold towel and their specialty drink. After a speedy check-in we were off to our rooms with our luggage arriving minutes later. From then on we hardly left the resort. 9 bars, 7 restaurants, the most amazing pool, and palm trees-lots and lots of palm trees. I'm not talking the short, fat wannabe palm trees. I mean the tall, skinny, have a coconut kind of palm trees.
And the next 7 days are merely the sand, the surf, the pool and total relaxation. We did do one excursion which was pretty fun. Snorkeling on the reef and then swimming with nurse sharks. But other than that, our time was at the resort. We participated in activities that the staff offered and they were fun. But the beach and water were just so peaceful....that's where we spent most of our time.
Honestly, we count the days till we can go back. The people were very accommodating and very friendly. The food was pretty good and the resort as a whole was excellent. I have been to Mexico and Puerto Rico and in my opinion do not hold a candle to the Dominican Republic.
